Dandara: Trials of Fear Edition
Dandara: Trials of Fear looks pretty awesome. Metroidvanias (ugh) are a pretty neat genre at the best of times, and Dandara looks like a good one. Unlike its genre stablemates, Dandara is about defying gravity and getting around the levels using a grappling hook. Grappling hooks are always cool. That’s just a fact. The limitation comes in where you can only stand (or grapple onto) specific parts of the level, meaning that even just the act of navigating can be a puzzle in itself. The Trials of Fear Edition adds a new area and new enemies, as well as some general quality of life stuff that the original version needed.
Once again this is a game I haven’t actually played yet, so I can’t say for sure whether its as good as the 87% of Steam users claim. But what I can say is that the map rotates around sometimes in a way that totally reminds me of Mode 7 on the SNES. That’s me sold right away.
But Flinthook also has grappling hooks and I didn’t enjoy that one so much. I had high hopes and it let me down. Beautiful, but I didn’t find the core gameplay loop fun when I first played it. Couple of years ago, mind, so maybe I should go back.
So I guess maybe my advice is to not let yourself get misled by grappling hooks. That’s a life lesson right there.
