Today’s free game in the 15 Days of Free Games is ARPG Torchlight 2. You can find out if it’s worth picking up right here!
This year for Christmas, Epic is doing 15 days of free games, with each title only being available for 24 hours. Here’s today’s offering as well as what I think about it!
Epic Games Store: 15 Days of Free Games – 30th December 2020
Everyone loves a good ARPG. And Torchlight 2 is a good ARPG. It’s from 2012, which at the end of 2020 makes that about 5000 years ago, but the good news is that the top-down mouse-driven genre usually tends to age pretty well.
One of my favourite features of the Torchlight games (over similar games like Diablo or even Victor Vran) is that the dungeons themselves are procedurally generated. And anyone who knows me knows that I love procedural generation. So where Diablo 3 had the same dungeons with randomised loot, Torchlight 2 has the layout change as well. I had a big issue picking up D3 after it had been out for a few months, where players I grouped with were just speedrunning the whole thing and leaving me behind. I like to explore, damn it!
Other featurew that I like about Torchlight 2 are that Runic Games put a lot of effort into making it moddable. It’s got Steam Workshop support and a whole standalone editor. It also has a day and night cycle, which is pretty unusual for the genre. Not really surprising then that it’s critically acclaimed. I just wouldn’t bother with Torchlight 3, since it’s apparently the weakest in the series.
