Epic Games Store - What's Free Now?

Pine is the Fable-like open world RPG that’s free on the Epic Games Store from 6th May 2021! Here’s what I think about it!

Here are the games currently free of charge on the Epic Games Store. These are typically only around for a week, so if you see anything you like the look of you’d better move fast before they disappear!

Epic Games Store: Free Games – 6th May 2021

Pine is an open world RPG adventure set in the world of Albamare, and it seems pretty cute. I played just under an hour of it at launch but all I can really say is that it definitely starts off slowly. I didn’t get into it. To be honest, the descriptions make it sound like it’s doing everything that it can to basically be Fable. That’s not a bad thing in itself. But for a small developer that hadn’t really made any full-size games before, I think it was probably a little ambitious. That’s not to say it’s impossible, because everyone has to start somewhere! But maybe it’s a good idea to go in with your expectations managed.

One thing that might be worth bearing in mind is that although Pine was released in 2019, it doesn’t seem like the developers have done anything since. Patches for Pine stopped in June 2020 (although the fact that anything happened that year is a miracle in itself). So if something doesn’t work now, it’s unlikely to get a fix for the EGS version.
